3. UI 2000 Review

The recently completed Underwater Interventions 2000 Conference (Houston, TX) January 24-25 was well attended with many attendees expressing interest in AUV technology, concern over the stagnation of oil exploration and pleasure with the cable route market.  With its fine steak restaurants, proximity to customers, and opportunity for debauchery, Houston served admirably as a host city.  In what has become a "must crash", the Dynacon /T. Thompson hospitality suite did not disappoint.

The Adams Mark Hotel, however, proved to be a terrible venue.  The exhibit hall was broken up into three rooms and two hallways.  One room was on the other side of the hotel disconnected from the rest of the exhibit area.  Incredibly, many booths had pillars literally in the middle of their floor space.  One can only hope that the people at UI get it right next year in Tampa, FL (and T. Thompson brings along their salmon and capers).

Out of a possible 10 badges, UI 2000 receives:  5 1/2

4. ASA Purchases 9802

The Antarctic Support Associates has taken delivery of another EPC Model 9802 Thermal Graphic Recorder. The analog and parallel TGR will be used aboard the R/V Gould.  ASA also supports a second research vessel, the R/V Palmer which currently operates three of the multi-purpose Model 9800 Series TGRs. Two Model 9800s are used to print bathymetric data from the ODEC Bathy 2000P, seismic data, and for pinger tracking. The third Model 9802 is used with the SeaBeam Instruments deep ocean multibeam echosounder. In addition to the Model 9800s, the R/V Palmer also has Model 3200s and 4600s.  Aboard the R/V Gould there is an EPC Model GSP-1086-2 in operation with a Knudsen 320B echosounder.

6. Accessories Sold

Besides offering Thermal Graphic Recorders (TGRs) and Data Acquisition Systems, EPC also offers print utilities and product accessories.  EPC recently accepted orders from American Underwater Search and Survey (Cataumet, MA) for a GSP-1086 Cover Assembly, Gardline Surveys (Great Yarmouth, UK) for three D/A Converters and from NORI (Korea) for an Image Processing Utility and WIN Developers Tool Kit.  The D/A Converter allows operators to print any digital data (GSP-1086 compatible) to any analog recorder.  An example would be printing digital data from the Coda software to the analog channels of an Ultra 3710 recorder.

7. FAQ:  Is the OTC BBQ Still On?

With the Benthos acquisition of Datasonics, one of the most frequently asked questions is whether or not the annual EPC - Datasonics cookout during the week of the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, TX May 1-4 is still planned.  The answer is YES!!  For the past 10 years (actual number changes on manufactures whim) EPC and Datasonics have hosted customers in the Gulf and beyond to a pool-side Texas-Yankee Barbecue of beef, sausage, margarita, beer and all the fixin's.  For this years date and time please contact Margo Newcombe, E-Mail:  Mnewcomb@aol.com
