By all accounts the Oceanology International 2000
Conference in Brighton, England was a big success. The murmurs
of "best ever" and "its been a great show" could
be heard throughout the exhibit hall. The statistics PGI-Spearhed
quickly published certainly backs up the points; 6146 people attended
- up from 6033 in '98, over 600 exhibitors, and 25% more floor space
was used. What seems to set the show apart is the high number
and quality of serious users.
Spearhead-PGI hosted two receptions, Monday evenings
promotion of OI 2001 Americas at the Metropole and Wednesday nights
"Beer on the Pier". Both events were well attended
with Monday's event featuring a Cuban Band (albeit a tad loud for
the room). It is a shame that the Metropole decided to renovate
the downstairs bar, always a great meeting place during the show.
The MOTN event also packed 'em in at the elegant Grand Hotel.
The room proved too small as it quickly became rather warm.
Racal's popular "Casino Night" came without a Casino,
as it opted, disappointingly so, for an aquarium venue.
Towards the end of the show, talk shifted to the
future of Oceanology International. PGI-Spearhead pleaded
that 20 exhibitors were turned away and that the show may have finally
outgrown the Metropole Hotel. A questionnaire was passed around
laying options for moving the show to London's "The Docks",
the new convention center in Edinburgh, Scotland or down the street
to the Brighton Convention Center. The proposed changes gain
credence with travelers who have grown tired of Brighton's lack
of a reasonably priced hotel that offers hot and cold water and
a bed a grown man can feel comfortable sleeping in. The proximity
of Brighton has always left the even the most seasoned traveler
asking, "how do I get back to the airport?"
The problem with moving the show means that the
"Brighton Show" would cease to exist. London or
Edinburgh would offer modern hotels with full amenities, but the
show would lose the familiarity and intimacy that makes the Brighton
show so unique. One can only hope that the Metropole gets
a serious facelift from the Hilton Hotel chain that now owns it.
If exhibit space is so critical, move the show to the Brighton Conference
Center and let travelers fend for themselves. We will have
to live with closet size bathrooms and children size beds, but it
is small price to pay for the large turnout we enjoy.

During the OI 2000 Conference EPC secured two
firm orders. Survey Equipment Services purchased their first
MP-1086. The MP-1086 is the newest in the 1086 Series and
allows operators the ability to directly interface EG&G 272
tow fish and all Klein analog tow fish. The MP-1086 also integrates
a 2.2 GB mass storage, heave compensation and all the 500 Series
features. Shanghai Dredging through the work of EPC
Sales Representative China-ORES also placed an order for a GSP-1086-2
500 Series recorder. Previously, EPC has supplied a GSP-1086
to the Shanghai Waterways Bureau.

The previous issue of the EPC Monthly (VOL. 2
NO. 14) featured a review of the Underwater Interventions 2000 Conference
held in Houston, TX in January. The review seemed to strike
a nerve with many readers and even prompted a response from Executive
Director of the Association of Diving Contractors International
Inc., Ross Saxon, Ph.D., who admitted, "Ted - could not agree
more re hotel for UI2000. We knew the problems going in and they
exacerbated during the planning process with many changes necessary
as precipitated by the hotel double booking. In fact, in 1997 we
offered that hotel a sum of money to get out of the 2000 contract.
Obviously, they refused. Tampa, and future shows will be much better.
I believe that past shows have also shown the excellence of UI but
this one was, yes frankly, not up to expectations. Bear with us
- it WILL get better".
