Despite threatening skies (it poured buckets the
previous day), the 12th Annual EPC- Benthos Texas Yankee BBQ was
a big hit. For the first time since the acquisition of Datasonics,
EPC co-hosted the event with Benthos Inc. By all accounts,
the BBQ was the best attended yet with all of the survey companies,
lease agencies and some fellow manufacturers in attendance.
For the first time a police detail, Houston ordinance, was stationed
at the pool-side event. A new caterer, Holy Smokers, also
received rave reviews as did the new t-shirt design.
A big thanks to all that were able to attend. See you next
year.

The recently concluded Offshore Technology Conference
in Houston, TX came and went without much fanfare or enthusiasm.
Despite high oil prices, the show lacked the usual crowded isles
and "buzz" that typically accompanies the large oil show.
With a few exceptions like Kongsberg, Thomson Marconi and the connector
companies, Sea Con, Brantner & D.G. O'Brian, there was a noticeable
absent of marine instrumentation manufacturers from the exhibit
floor. Also absent were any sales representatives and equipment
lease pools. Attendance statistics may reflect a big turnout,
but it doesn't take into account for people's moods towards a slow
exploration forecast.

Attending the Sixth Annual International Conference
Remote Sensing for Marine and Coastal Environments for the first
time was a pleasant surprise. EPC Labs, Inc. exhibited with
South Coast Sales Representative, Aquamap and had the unique distinction
of being the only exhibitor offering hardware demonstrations at
the sensing conference. The show was held at the brand new
Embassy Suites Hotel and Charleston Area Convention Center in Charleston,
South Carolina, USA. Although away from the downtown area,
the facility proved to be an excellent venue for a trade show.
The smaller conference was well attended the first two days, but
had a significant decline on the last day.

Sensing Conference receives: # # # # # # (6).

In a recent press release in Oceanspace, Ocean
Data Equipment Corp. announced that the TDU-1200F and TDU-2000F
thermal recorders are now available with EPC 9800 Series emulation
capability. The product is advertised to replace "older
9800 thermal graphic recorders" with "high performance"
ODEC TDUs. Although the 9800 Series TGRs have been in production
since 1991, nine years is not considered old by EPC standards.
Not only is the 9800 Series still in production, EPC still supports,
services and repairs all of its recorders dating back to the early
'70s.
On top of the press release, ODEC has told customers
that the new BATHY 2000W Chirp Sub-Bottom Profiler will support
only ODEC printers. With close to 500 GSP-1086 Series printers
in the field, EPC is curious to see how long this proclamation will
last.
