2. Sales: Best August In Years

In what is typically one of the slower months of the year, this August proved to be the best on record.  EPC started its 34th year in business with a bang, including recorder sales to Fugro Geonics (India), Technos Inc. (Florida), Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (California), Hydrographic Department (Germany) and Superior Services (Wisconsin).

3. Show Reviews: Oceans 2000 & Stennis Conference

The recently concluded Oceans 2000 Conference held at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, RI (September 11-14) proved to be one of the best Oceans Conferences in recent years.  By all accounts the show was better than expected.  It is still unclear if this is due to a better organized show or such low expectations.  With many companies based in the New England area, some exhibitors were afforded the luxury of commuting to the conference.  The only drawback being traffic delays around Providence and/or Boston.  Many travelers had the misfortune of inclement weather and told nightmare stories of delays in midwest US airports.

The Conference Center was a very good venue and the town of Providence offered  good restaurants all within walking distance.  The only drawback to Providence was the price and availability of the hotels which left some attendees scrambling for rooms or staying outside the city.  The MTS/IEEE hosted a "WaterFire Event" which proved to be a lovely evening visually (nice weather), but huge lines for food turned many away.  MOTN hosted its routinely popular reception at the Westin Hotel.  Fortunately no one was hurt during the feeding frenzy around the raw oysters and shrimp offering.  The show had above average attendance and had a surprisingly large number of international customers.  Which begs to ask why doesn't the New England region host more ocean conferences?

Next years event is to be held in Hawaii and should be attended by only Government Employees seeking tans or spouses looking to score points.  Attendance could change if MTS announces the exhibit area will be in the middle of a swim-up bar.

Out of a possible ten badges, Oceans 2000 receives a SEVEN.

STENNIS CONFERENCE

This small conference slipped under the radar screen of many manufacturers.  The Stennis Conference was held at the Stennis Space Center, MS from September 6-7th.  The show was not essential for anyone doing business with NAVOCEANO but benefited from its low cost booths and focused audience.  The conference was cut short from its already short (2 days) schedule when exhibitors broke down three hours early.
Out of a possible 10 badges, the Stennis Conference receives a FOUR.

5. EPC Part Of Israeli Submarine Modernization

This month EPC will deliver five more Model 9602s as part of a final modernization program of the third German made Dolphin submarine for the Israeli Navy.  The TGRs are to be delivered to STN Atlas Elektronik GmbH of Bremen, Germany who led development and integration of the submarine's combat system and major subsystem.

The decision of the German government to subsidize the bulk of the Israeli Dolphin program stemmed from the 1991 Persian Gulf War, when Israel's population risked chemical attack from Iraqi Scuds, which were thought to be equipped with warheads developed, in part, by German firms.  At the time, then-German Chancellor Helmut Kohl offered humanitarian and military assistance, including the three Dolphin submarines.+

6. Holiday: Columbus Day

EPC will be closed October 9th in observation of Columbus Day.  Columbus Day is observed the 2nd Monday in October, formerly October 12th, as a legal holiday in many states (Massachusetts being one) in commemoration of the landing of Columbus.  It also coincides with the Fall foliage as many tourist, or "leaf peepers" as they have been dubbed locally, visit the area to enjoy the colors of New England.
