commenting on the EPC - Benthos BBQ at OTC

Thanks to all who attended this years annual Yankee
BBQ in Houston, TX. The event was once again very well attended.
EPC and Benthos (formerly Datasonics) have been hosting Gulf Coast
customers, and anyone else in the area for the show, to a Texas
- Yankee BBQ. The event has evolved over the years but usually
always includes hot food, cold beer, frozen margaritas and good
cheer.
The OTC Conference was also well attended and
moods seemed very optimistic. Although there was a lack of
marine instrument manufactures (Kongsberg & Sonardyne the exception)
and lease agencies, the show was worth the walk through.

EPC was pleased to participate in the U.S. Hydrographic
Conference in Norfolk, VA, May 21-24, 2001, (review follows) and
the upcoming Ocean Technology Workshop (OTW) hosted by MOTN in Plymouth,
MA (September 17-19, 2001). EPC will not be exhibiting at
the Oceans Conference in Hawaii or the OI Pacific Rim in Singapore.
Why announce shows that you are not attending?
Tired of being conspicuous by our absence or shamed
into exhibiting by competitors, EPC has taken the position of stating
our view ahead and after, hence the Monthly Show Reviews.
Oceans 2001 in Hawaii appears to be the biggest debacle of the year.
Not since Undersea Exploration in San Diego have so many exhibitors
been leery of exhibiting. Hawaii is a beautiful venue,
but what customers will traverse the Pacific Ocean to walk an exhibit
floor? OI Pacific Rim is a bit more dispiriting for EPC.
In the companies 34 year history, we are yet to miss an Oceanology
event. But OI Pacific Rim has had a marginal attendance and
doing three OI events all within eleven months is just too expensive.

The U.S. Hydro Show recently concluded in Norfolk,
VA (May 21-24th). Although the attendance was moderate, having
the show in Norfolk always proves to be the best locale (the other
being Baltimore, MD) because of its proximity to the U.S. Navy.
The Sheraton Waterside Hotel is a lovely backdrop, providing easy
access to the conference, sea trials, and walking distance to several
restaurants. The Hotel is due for a make-over, however, and
would benefit with faster elevators.
The U.S. Hydro, although small in size,
offers a focused audience and always fairs better than it's Canadian
biennial counterpart. The Conference also offered two very
good social events: Tuesday's Beer Social and Wednesday's BBQ.
The Beer Social, a long standing tradition complete with glass beer
mug, offered very good food. The BBQ was held outdoors at
the Nauticos Museum and featured a tour of the USS Wisconsin Battleship
and complete pig roast. One of the best social events of the
year. Out of a possible 10 badges the U.S. Hydro receive 6
1/2.
