1. Quote of the Month

"We send our heartfelt sympathies to all of our citizens of your great country.  Although the United States had the misfortune to sustain the direct impact of this tragedy, it was symbolically an attack on all people who embrace freedom and democracy.  Please accept our sincere condolences and know that we share your grief and your resolve to expunge terrorism from the face of the earth."

Kohzo Yumoto, President
Toyo Corporation
Sales Representative for EPC in Japan

EPC was overwhelmed with kind thoughts and prayers of support we received from our customers, sales representatives, and vendors world-wide.

2. OTW A No Go

In light of the tragedies that occurred just prior to the show, the Marine Ocean Technology Network (MOTN) decided to postpone the 3rd Ocean Technology Workshop.  Because the two ill fated flights that struck the World Trade Center originated out of Boston, Logan Airport remained closed up to that Friday, as it was a main focus of the investigation.   In addition to the airport being closed, further threats continued over the week, and the appropriateness of canceling the event became apparent.

In addition to the OTW being postponed, the MOTN Golf Scramble and the EPC Sales Representative meeting were also postponed. The MOTN is considering other dates for the event and, as a participant, EPC will let our customers know.

3. Oceaneering Seeing Double

EPC is pleased to announce that Oceaneering de Venezuela C.A. has purchased an additional GSP-1086-2 500 Series.   EPC reported back in May, (EPC Monthly VOL. 3 NO. 29 "SALES: EPC TO MARACAIBO"), that the engineering consultant company was to use it's first 1086 to survey submarine pipelines and cables in Lake Maracaibo for Petroleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA).

The 1086 Series remains the most popular printer in the industry.  Our repeat customers are one of the reasons why!

4. Jimmy Reynolds (1950-2001)

EPC was shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Jimmy Reynolds. Jimmy represented EPC in the Gulf when he worked at O.R.E. Offshore and Survey Equipment Services. Jimmy had a certain ease and unique outlook on life that was both infectious and fun to be around. He will be missed.

5. Show Review: Shallow Survey 2001

Despite the recent anxiety over travel, the recently concluded Shallow Survey 2001 Conference in Portsmouth, NH was very well attended.  Hosted by the University of New Hampshire's Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping and the NOAA/UNH Joint Hydrographic Center (CCOM/JHC, NOAA), the show built upon the success of the first International conference held in Sydney, Australia in 1999.

The conference is very focused, concentrating on improvements in shallow water surveys.

The exhibitor list was kept small at approximately twenty, including Reson, Kongsberg, L-3 Communications, Klein, Edgetech, GeoAcoustics, TEI, TSS, and Caris to name a few.  EPC attended but did not exhibit.  Papers concentrated on improvements in bathymetric and side-scan processing, seabed classification, multibeam mapping with participants urged to work with a common data set.

The Sheraton Harborside Hotel was a nice venue, although expensive to stay at ($140.00/night), and included a first rate conference facility with close proximity to the waterfront restaurants.   A cocktail reception Monday night offered hot hors d'oeuvres and ample drink tickets.   Wednesday nights Clambake Dinner gave attendees a choice between lobster, chicken or vegetable.  Other conference highlights included EdgeTech's unveiling of its new high speed, high resolution side scan sonar and Ron Schaff's talk on "Automated reduction of systemic errors in side-scan mosaics".

Out of possible 10 Badges, the Shallow Survey 2001 receives 7 1/2.

6.  Holiday: Closed For Columbus Day

EPC will be closed October 8th in observance of Columbus Day.  Always recognized on the 2nd Monday in October, the holiday commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus.  Only some states recognize the holiday, Massachusetts among them.
