No sense wasting time, as readers are curious
to know the EPC Monthly's take on this years biggest conference.
The show started on a somber note with the announcement of the passing
of industry pioneer and Oceanology fixture Martin "Mac"
MacArtney, founder of MacArtney Underwater Technology Group. The
ExCel Center lived up to the billing as being a modern exhibition
facility with restaurants and convenient waterfront. It was strange
seeing the industry all laid out on one floor, almost making it
look like just another show. Gone is the labyrinth of rooms and
floors that customers had to explore at the Metropole Hotel.
Hospitality and Social Events also lost some identity
as many events were held in the same rooms at the ExCel night after
night. There was no Racal Casino night, no Fish 'n Chips on the
pier, and no visiting (weaseling into) hotel suites. The biggest
drawback effecting the move from Brighton to London was the lack
of hotels and restaurants nearby. Many attendees found themselves
taking $30.00 taxi rides or 20 minute train rides back to their
hotel. If you stayed nearby, the hotels were... we'll be kind, modest.
The show has changed from a city that was hard to get to (Brighton)
with a convenient Conference (Metropole) to a city that is easy
to get to (London), but a conference in the middle of nowhere, (ExCel).
Taking a customer to dinner was equally challenging
- as no one seemed to know the area and asking a customer to get
on a train and find you in the city didn't seem appropriate. Spearhead
promises a 1,000 more hotel rooms and a host of new restaurants
for the next event in 2004.
This may all sound negative, it shouldn't, because
the faults were overshadowed by the large number and outstanding
caliber of attendees. The overwhelming response from exhibitors
was that it was a great show, and it was. As the industry adjusts,
and the area around the ExCel grows, so will the conference. Out
of a possible 10 badges (I can't quite give it eight) the OI 2002
Conference gets 7 3/4 badges ####### #.

The EPC Model 1280 made an impressive debut at
the OI Conference,. The "paperless printer", turned heads
with its super bright display and gorgeous looking data (courtesy
of Klein). The Model 1280 is a portable recorder capable of collecting
analog or digital data, displaying it on its bright 18" monitor,
storing to a variety of removable media while sending data to a
continuous printer (we recommend EPC) or over a network. The unit
is a drop in replacement to the 1086 Series for user's who don't
want paper. The solid state electronics, built in trackball, and
front end analog controls make the Model 1280 - portable, rugged
and easy to use.

As a manufacture specializing in recording systems,
EPC is often contracted to custom engineer existing products to
meet special needs. The Government of Israel has contracted EPC
to modify the existing Model 9206. Already boasting a new Network,
high-speed Parallel Interface and wide 20" display, the new
Model 9207 will incorporate such changes as a circular RS-232 MIL-Type
Connector, Special Cover Assembly, and Software Code Modifications.
The first of the custom TGRs was delivered in February. The recorder
is to be used by the Navy in an Anti-Submarine Warfare application.
