2. New from EPC

EPC Labs, Inc. (Danvers, MA) is shipping production units of its new line of integrated Data Acquisition Systems. The MP-1086 and 1086NT (based on the popular 1086 architecture) incorporate an embedded Windows NT operating system, TCP/IP socket interface, and XTF data storage to provide end-users with a comprehensive data collection solution. These network ready printers also include all the needed processing features: slant range correction, speed correction, filters, TVG, etc. Playback and annotation of data is easy and intuitive. Collected data are easily manipulated with most popular post-processing systems.

The MP-1086 is a full acquisition system that can be used to replace the analog transceiver (EG&G 260 and Klein). The towfish interface and power supply are built right into the recorder. Local mass storage is available for saving the digitized data, or like the 1086NT, the data can be exported over a network connection to a remote server. Both units have an integrated navigation input for annotating position, heading, speed, and other important information on the record. The ASCII data is also stored in the XTF format and can be selectively played back. Side Scan features are particularly robust with the implementation of a bottom tracking algorithm and fish height display and alarm.

The MP1086 and 1086NT are not just analog systems. The two models also provide the standard 1086 parallel interface to which virtually all top-side processors have been interfaced. Expanding the digital capabilities beyond any other survey plotter in the industry, EPC has developed a TCP/IP socket interface that can be used to connect to the latest digital sonars. This interface comes with a developer‚s API for simple integration and has already been successfully tested with several manufacturers. Contact Ted Curley sales@epclabs.com

3. Yankee BBQ - The Biggest Yet

This year's Annual Texas - Yankee BBQ was the biggest, most attended to date. EPC and co-host Benthos Inc. hosted customers and industry personnel to a Texas style BBQ during the week of the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston. With the OTC Conference featuring less and less representation of the oceanographic industry, the EPC-Benthos event has become a popular gathering and focal point of the week. The casual cook-out featured ribs, chicken, sausage, beef briquet, baked beans, potato salad, margarita, beer, soda and a free t-shirt. Thanks to all who could attend.

4. Yankee Golf Scramble

To call it the Yankee Golf Scramble may be a bit of a misnomer as there were more participants from the UK and overseas than from the U.S. (or at least the North East). The event has grown rather quickly and this year's event moved to the popular Tour 18 Course just north of Houston. The course features replicas of famous golf holes from courses all over the country. There is Amen Corner from Augusta (9, 10 & 11), the famous island hole for the TPC Course, the Blue Monster (18th at Doral), you get the idea. This year's winning foursome; Bob Bankert, Bill Charbonneau (Benthos), George Macaffery (Seatronics), and Rob Bollach (TSS). There was also a winner of the Longest Drive, David Currie (Seatronics) - prize donated by TSS and closest to the pin, Bob Bankart - prize donated by Survey Equipment Services.

5. Sales: HSPectacular!

When EPC introduced the Model HSP-100 not long ago, it was offered as a lower cost alternative to the popular GSP-1086 Series for operators interested in a simple, compact & rugged solution to print high resolution parallel data. It was also designed as direct competition for some of the lower end (translation: cheaper) printers that were flooding the industry. There are now over 50 HSP-100 in the field with recent sales to: Italian Coast Guard, IISI, Fugro John Chance, and University of Alabama.

Editor's Note: This month's edition was somewhat tardy. We will try to pick up the pace. Apologies to all. The EPC Monthly is a FREE on-line Newsletter provided to EPC customers and industry personnel.
